Protests at UC Davis muzzle conservative speakers

UC Davis officials cancelled a speaking engagement featuring conservative Milo Yiannopoulos and reviled drug company executive Martin Shkreli. Several hundred protesters turned out January 13 to urge authorities to shut down the event, and after meeting with campus police, the Davis College Republicans decided to end it in the interests of safety. The protesters were peaceful but blocking access to the venue. (Los Angeles Times, January 15, 2017, by Ben Poston and Shelby Grad)

University officials said the protests were not violent  as Yiannopoulos supporters contended but said it was not right for those opposed to the speaking event to cause it to shut down. Freedom of speech was the greatest loser. (The Sacramento Bee, January 14, 2017, by Sammy Caioloa, Hudson Sangree and Christopher Cadelago)

  • Still trying to figure out how we can get the Maywood city council to change there old council rule that request speakers to fill out a card before the meeting starts or they can not speak. I believe it should be a issue that a speaker can turn in the card at any time before the item has been closed. Several times I have heard a speaker and then had something important or productive to say. As a activist who often slips into a one piece clown costume to bring attention to the issue. Freedom of speach and first amendment coalation are always in my heart and I sincerly appreciate what you do for libirties.

  • Thats straight Ghetto Democratic party Sorros what they pulled and this log cabin acting Republican canceled what a coward. People have a right to be heard because “you shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free”. Some times you have to fight for whats right.
