A lawsuit filed in December by the National Security Archive and three other co-plaintiffs has succeeded in preserving White House records including WhatsApp messages. Nonprofit expands statehouse coverage in otherwise ghost town news atmosphere

The nonprofit States Newsroom provides readers with statehouse coverage showing that local and state news need not perish. It plans to open five outlets this year in Idaho, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Oregon and New Mexico while providing a free syndication service of statehouse coverage to other news organizations. New law requiring civil rights cold case investigations remains in limbo

Former President Donald Trump signed a bill setting up a board to release records of unsolved murders from the civil rights era. Court rules for transparency in heretofore unpublished immigration decisions

A federal appeals court ruled that the Board of Immigration Appeals must publish immigration decisions in a forum accessible to the public. Over 30,000 decisions are made each year, provided to government lawyers and employees but not to immigrants’ lawyers. The Second Circuit stated that the Freedom of Information Act did not support “secret agency law” to limit access to those opposing the government in immigration proceedings.
