First Amendment restraints could dampen prospects of TikTok ban

The Biden administration and Congress members are considering a ban on TikTok, owned by ByteDance, based in Beijjing and subject to Chinese laws including one requiring businesses to help the Chinese government whenever asked. China could ask TikTok to provide it with user data or to upload propaganda or false information on its platform fueling risks to national security. TikTok says it is independent of the government and operates outside China. The American Civil Liberties Union opposes a ban on TikTok and that a law considered by Congress would violate the First Amendment and the right to free speech and association. (Axios, March 6, 2023, by Ivana Saric)
