Iowa State sued for ban on political speech

First Amendment defenders are suing Iowa State University in federal court for banning e-mails about issues and campaigns and chalking to announce student events. University President Windy Wintersteen announced the ban a month before the Iowa Caucus, saying the intent was to curb hate speech. (The Federalist, January 5, 2020, by Chrissy Clark)

Speech First Inc. filed the lawsuit charging that the prohibition on e-mails shackles students. “Iowa State University has created an elaborate investigative and enforcement regime,” said First Speech president Nicole Neily, “designed to chill speech concerning political and social issues of public concern.” (Ames Tribune, January 2, 2020, by Robbie Sequeira)
