Free speech victory in California T-shirt controversy

A California high school junior settled a case with her school district that allowed her to wear a T-shirt with a LGBT message so long as it didn’t disrupt the school or target other students. She had been sent home last August wearing a shirt that said “Nobody Knows I’m a Lesbian.” The American Civil Liberties Union helped her sue the Manteca Unified School District in federal court. The school district changed its dress code in accordance with the settlement. “Freedom of speech is a bedrock principle of our democracy, and censorship teaches students exactly the wrong lesson on what America is about. We are pleased to see the district make these changes,” said Linnea Nelson, an attorney with Northern California ACLU. (Courthouse News Service, February 18, 2018, by Nick Cahill)

  • This language is as polluting to the soul as poor air quality is to one’s lungs. That you spend time, money and energy promoting what is uncivil discourse in the name of “free speech” is appalling. You have No social values at all.
