Texas cities attacking open meeting law on free speech grounds

Texas cities are pursuing their lawsuit in federal appeals court to contest criminal penalties for open meetings violations. They claim criminal penalties for taking part in an illegal closed meeting violate their First Amendment rights.

Defenders of the Texas Open Meetings Act contend that law is needed to prevent secret decisions on the people’s business. -db
