Should you know the details of a public official’s private deal?

Tracking down records on key public figures can be a “Where’s Waldo” adventure. Case in point: California Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom, former mayor of San Francisco, moonlights as “Ambassador at Large” for the America’s Cup sailboat race coming to the Bay in 2013. So who has details of the deal and are you entitled to see them?

Newsom’s job, according to the America’s Cup, is to “support the America’s Cup Event Authority in its efforts to create a superior fan and participant experience both on and off the water. In addition, the Lieutenant Governor will help assist in attracting and welcoming visitors from other states and abroad to California and San Francisco for America’s Cup events.”

But what does the lieutenant governor get out of it, and does the deal present any conflicts or compromises? Larry Bush, editor of CitiReport.com, tried to find out.

The official answer: Don’t ask us. The deal is private, between Newsom and race officials, the lieutenant governor’s office told Bush.
