Ninth Circuit criticized for secrecy in anonymous speech case

The Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of of Appeals has stated its intention to decide an important free speech issue on the rights of anonymous speakers on the internet in secret without the benefit of amici briefs. The case arose when the United States served a subpoena on Glassdoor, an employer-rating site, that sought the identities of over 100 psuedonymous accounts that posted reviews on an employer subject to federal criminal investigation. Atlanta mayor blocks transparency with release of millions of paper documents

In a novel move to stymie inquiry, Atlanta Mayor Kassim Reed released 1.476 million documents related to FBI investigations into alleged bribes for city contracts. Reed and the city attorney claimed that the release was a boon to transparency. Reed said he produced the documents in paper form to expedite the release and said he planned to make the documents available in electronic form but did not say when. A&A: CA Medical Board non-responsive to PRA request

Q: I am a volunteer patient safety advocate in California. I have been trying to get a series of document from the Medical Board of California (and their parent the Department of Consumer Affairs) through public records requests. I think I’ve only received one document, and it wasn’t the document I requested, and the document they sent had whole sections missing and a number of individual pages (there were a few pages marked with redactions).
