California Supreme Court takes case challenging secrecy of license plate reader data

The California Supreme Court agreed to consider a lawsuit by the EFF and ACLU of Southern California asking for a week’s data of the automated license plate readers collected by Los Angeles Police and Sheriff’s departments. The two groups are also contesting a lower court  finding that license plates scans were records of ongoing investigations exempt from the California Public Records Act. Documentary filmmaker sues for answers to government harassment

In the absence of a satisfactory response to her Freedom of Information Act requests, Laura Poitras, a prize-winner documentary filmmaker, is suing the government to find out why they searched, questioned and detained her over 50 times in airports in the U.S. and abroad. Appeal made to California Supreme Court for public access to license plate scans

Two California nonprofits are appealing a court decision allowing two law enforcement agencies to withhold data from license plate readers. The Electronic Frontier Foundation and the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California have sued the Los Angeles police and sheriff’s department for the data to find out more about how law enforcement agencies are using surveillance technology. The departments claim the records are part of investigations and exempt under the California Public Records Act.
