Why we were ready to sue one California county.

The ordinance authorized the county to charge as much as $150/hour for staff time to locate, review, or redact documents people asked for under the California Public Records Act.

The letter requests the police officers’ union withdraw its cease and desist demand and notes there is no evidence Orellana’s statement is unprotected by the First Amendment.

In 2022, FAC served record numbers of constituents. We armed journalists with essential knowledge and tools and empowered them to do the important work of informing their communities. We provided custom workshops to empower Californians in their pursuit of facts and justice. We stood up for people being silenced and intimidated by government.

The groups plan to file a lawsuit if the county does not repeal the ordinance at its next meeting, set for May 9.
