California appellate judge orders release of documents in Monterey priest abuse case

A California court of appeal ruled that confidential discovery documents by the Catholic Diocese of Monterey in a case of sexual abuse by a priest in 2004 and 2005 had to be released to a local newspaper. The Monterey County Weekly felt that given a settlement in the case and that no jury could be influenced, it was entitled to full disclosure of documents to determine how the Diocese handled the case. A Superior Court judge said in 2013 that he would release depositions and other documents withheld pending a trial. The case was settled in 2012. In the order, the judge exempted the names of alleged minor victims and their families as well as the names of some church members and staff. He also ordered exempt information about consensual conduct between adults and psychological counseling. (Monterey Herald, November 13, 2013, by Larry Parsons)
