Free speech a target in state action to stop choice

The American Civil Liberties is suing the Idaho Attorney General for threats to medical personnel who give patients information about out-of-state abortion care. U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland said after Roe v. Wade was overturned that “under fundamental First Amendment principles, individuals must remain free to inform and counsel each other about the reproductive care that is available in other states.” (Axios, April 5,2023, by Sareen Habeshian and Oriana Gonzalez)

Rose Mackenzie of the ACLU, April 3, 2023, noted that Texas and Iowa introduced legislation that would make internet providers block websites giving information about abortion and allow any citizen to sue an internet provider who fails to block the websites. “Politicians across the country,” says Mackenzie, “have proposed bills taking aim at our right to discuss abortion care, to express the benefits of being able to determine if and when to become pregnant, and even to create art about reproductive health care.”
