Groups sue Chicago over denial of parade permits during Democratic convention

Activists are suing in federal court after Chicago denied them permits to march at the Democratic National Convention (DNC) set for August 19. The city did not find the routes viable, and the alternatives they suggested failed to meet the activists’ approval. (Chicago Sun-Times, July 13, 2024, by Mary Norkol)

The activists say shunting them to Grant Park denies them a chance to be seen and heard. “Chicago is home to an inspiring dynamic community of longtime organizers and newly mobilized youth activists and for the city and the Democratic Party to shut out those voices suggesting instead they march in a straight line in Grant Park where no one will hear them offends the First Amendment and sets a regressive tone for the DNC,” said Attorney Joe Dicola, an attorney for one of the groups.(WGN9, January 30, 2024, by Angelica Sanchez and Gabriel Castillo)
