Florida ‘anti-woke’ law fails free speech test

A federal judge ruled that Florida’s “anti-woke” law violated the free speech rights of private businesses. The law made illegal any lessons or training that could provoke “guilt, anguish or any other form of psychological distress” owing to race, color, or national origin. Federal courts found the law penalized certain viewpoints. Companies found the law repugnant in that it prevented them from holding discussions with employees that would improve their workplaces. A separate challenge on how the anti-woke law applies to colleges and universities is under appeal. (Politico, July 26, 2024, by Andrew Atterbury)

Governor Ron DeSantis claimed the ruling would allow businesses “to indoctrinate their employees with racist and discriminatory ideologies.” (CNN , March 5, 2024, by Chandelis Duster and Nicquel Terry Ellis)
