Trump sues Washington Post for defamation

Former president Donald Trump is suing the Washington Post for $3.78 billion claiming the Post defamed them by reporting that Truth Social platform may have committed securities fraud. An article alleged that the company concealed details from the Securities and Exchange Commission about a proposed merger. (The Independent, May 23, 2023, by Bevan Hurley)

Defamation lawyer Camron Dowlatshahi said that Trump would have difficulty making the case the requires a showing of actual malice given that the claims in the Post article were based on multiple sources including a whistleblower. Dowlatshahi also said that the company itself is most likely not even worth a billion dollars so the amount of damages is grossly exaggerated. (Newsweek, May 23, 2023, by Ewan Palmer)
