Federal nursing home ratings obscure harsh realities

A New York Times investigation showed that serious abuses by the nation’s nursing homes were not including in a federal rating system set up to provide information to people about the safety and quality of the homes. Over 2700 “dangerous incidents” were omitted in entering the data in the ratings system run by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (C.M.S.). A Times study in March and updated in August showed that much of the information given to the C.M.S. was false, making the homes appear cleaner and safer than they are. An analysis of 130,000 deaths from Covid-19 showed that five-star facilities did not do better in die rates than one-star homes.
