Philadelphia newspaper sues to obtain Ikea recall records after six infants die

The Philadelphia Inquirer is suing the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CSPC) in federal court for records related to their coverage of Ikea’s recall of dressers that caused the deaths of six toddlers. The Inquirer is upset that the CPSC withheld or redacted records making it difficult to conduct a public inquiry that could prevent similar fiascos from occurring. Last summer Ikea balked at releasing internal documents to a judge in a civil case brought by a mother of a two-year-old killed by the collapse of a dresser. The documents were ones that it had already supplied to the CSPC. Ikea has refused to release the documents saying it would have a “chilling effect” on its transparency in dealing with the CSPC.
