California judge errs in tossing reporter from murder case courtroom

A California superior court judge ordered a reporter out of the courtroom and told her not to publish any evidence from the proceedings in a trial of a man accused of murdering and sexually assaulting a 3-year-old girl. The judge gave no reason for the order. The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that all judicial proceedings are open to the press and public. Within two hours the superior court presiding judge cancelled the order writing that under the First Amendment it was a mistake to exclude the press from an open forum. (The Fresno Bee, October 6, 2016, by Lewis Griswold)
