Federal court sidelines Cleveland restrictions on speeches and parades at Republican convention

A federal district judge issued an injunction commanding Cleveland to rewrite its regulations for the Republican National Convention slated for July. The ACLU and Citizens for Trump objected to the regulations and the judge said the 3.5 mile security zone was “unduly large” and not designed effectively to promote safety. He urged the ACLU and the city to work on a new plan. (Los Angeles Times, June 23, 2016, by Matt Pearce)

The ACLU had complained that under Cleveland’s plan, delegates would never see demonstrators eliminating the point of demonstrating. Security zone sizes at other presidential conventions have ranged from 2.7 to 0.14 square miles. (Huffington Post, June 23, 2016, by Kim Bellware)

The district judge James Gwin also found that Cleveland’s convention guidelines restricted free speech rights in designating parade routes and local parks for demonstrations where no delegates would be present. (The Hill, June 23, 2016, by Mark Hensch)
