Bad consequences result from sealing documents in Trump University fraud case

For nearly two years presidential candidate Donald Trump benefited by a court order to seal key documents regarding the fraud lawsuit against Trump University. Trump’s lawyers had argued successfully that the documents were trade secrets. Now federal district Judge Gonzalo Curiel of San Diego ruled that  the public’s right to know prevailed over the trade secrets argument especially since there have been no new clients for the real estate seminars since 2010. Alison Frankel in Reuters, May 31, 2016, writes that the documents show the main purpose of the seminars was to fleece clients and should have been open to the public early in the primary season.

With the documents set for release on Thursday, June 2, Trump attacked Judge Curiel on personal grounds to feed the zealots of his constituency and draw attention away from the merits of the case to focus instead on the integrity of the court proceedings.
