California: News service wins federal court ruling in quest for timely access to new complaints filed in state courts

A federal district judge ruled for Courthouse News in their extended campaign to force the Ventura courts to allow the press to review a complaint as soon as it comes to the clerk. The judge also prohibited the clerk from withholding documents while they are processed and entered into the system. “The Court concludes that CNS [Courthouse News Service] has succeeded in establishing a qualified First Amendment right of timely access to such complaints that attaches when new complaints are received by a court,” wrote Judge James Otero.
