Company officials said they were acting to “protect privacy and free expression, and to prevent harassment.” (The Financial Express, June 16, 2015, by Ani)

Forum users accused Reddit of censorship in violation of their free speech rights and circulated a petition to fire Reddit CEO Ellen Pao. But cyberlaw lawyer Carrie Goldberg said there were no free speech issues since Reddit is a private company and can set any rules it wants for its forums.  (CTV News, June 12, 2015, by Emily Chan)

In May Reddit set out rules to eliminate individual attacks, offering a definition of harassment in reference to their forums. The company said the attacks stifled the free expression of ideas and made people, especially women, “…uncomfortable contributing or even recommending Reddit to others.” (The Verge, May 14, 2015, by Adi Robertson)

Twitter has recently offered shared block lists to its users to curtail harassment. Users can join with others to defend against abuse and annoying trolls. Some argue that the lists could silence voices on political grounds, and while it has the legal right to take action, Twitter risks its standing as a free speech forum in offering the block lists.  (Fortune, June 12, 2015, by Mathew Ingram)
