California Brown Act roundup: District attorney finds violation by Burbank school board

The Los Angeles County district attorney will not take any legal action but admonished the Burbank school board for violating the Brown Act for failing to report naming a finalist in its quest for a superintendent. Since the selection of the finalist has long since become public, the DA said it would not serve any purpose to pursue the matter. (The Burbank Leader, June 23, 2015, by Keyy Corrigan)

An editorial in The Burbank Leader, June 26, 2015, said the board had violated their avowed mission to follow the law. “It’s [the failure to report the finalist] a small misstep in the scheme of things, but it points out they don’t understand fully the importance of a transparent government, and it opens the door to more questions about the hiring of the new superintendent, something the board surely doesn’t need or want.”

A grand jury in Stanislaus County reported that Patterson public officials had purchased a building without any public notice or city council vote. The jury said the building was purchased without due diligence including failure to conduct inspections and engineering and feasibility reports. (The Modesto Bee, June 23, 2015, by Rosalio Ahumada)

A Humboldt County grand jury charged that the Point Arena School board failed to respond to their findings of a number of improprieties including Brown Act violations.
