California: First Amendment battle proceeds over timely access to civil complaints

The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press filed a brief with the Ninth Circuit U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals urging the court to reverse a lower court ruling allowing the Ventura County Superior Court to deny the news media timely access to official court records. The Ventura County Superior Court abandoned the practice of  releasing civil complaints on the filing date, only providing them to the public days or weeks later when the complaints had been fully processed. The Courthouse News e sued the superior court clerk for violating the First Amendment. (The Judicial View, April, 2014)
