California college student barred from distributing Constitution on campus wins $50K settlement

A Modesto Junior College student won a $50,000 settlement after he sued his school for stopping him from distributing copies of the Constitution outside an official free speech zone. The college also agreed to revise its rules to allow free speech in open areas on campus. Most of the settlement will go for legal fees. (Fox News, February 25, 2014

The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE)  helped the student Robert Van Tuinen in bringing his lawsuit and in a press release, February 25, 2014, after the settlement FIRE quoted President Greg Luckianoff:  “FIRE is very pleased that Robert Van Tuinen and Modesto Junior College have reached this settlement—and that Modesto Junior College students will now be able to exercise their First Amendment rights across campus. But because 59% of colleges nationwide maintain policies that clearly and substantially restrict student speech, there’s much more work to be done.”
