University of Alabama blocks spontaneous student protest

The University of Alabama police ordered a pro-choice student group to stop distributing flyers on campus in April to protest a pro-life event. The police threatened to arrest the students unless they applied for a grounds use permit which, in any case, could not be granted in time to protest the event. Under the University of Alabama’s rules, student groups would have to give several days’ notice before an event so could be prevented from ever organizing spontaneous protests. (Volokh Conspiracy, July 2, 1013, by Eugene Volokh)
