Federal appeals court rejects free speech claim in upholding Illinois campaign disclosure

The 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled 2-1 that the Center for Individual Freedom must register and reveal its donors under Illinois law. The Center claimed the law violated their First Amendment rights.

“Amidst this cacophony of political voices — super PACs, corporations, unions, advocacy groups, and individuals, not to mention the parties and candidates themselves — campaign finance data can help busy voters sift through the information and make informed political judgments,” Judge David Hamilton wrote. -db
