ACLU defends right to protest amid Ferguson turmoil

The American Civil Liberties Union took Missouri agencies to court in protest of their stipulation that anyone standing for more than five seconds on sidewalks in Ferguson would be subject to arrest. The ACLU is suing St. Louis County and the Highway Patrol claiming that the arrest of law-abiding individuals for simply standing still for over five seconds is a clear violation of the First Amendment. A federal judge refused to grant the ACLU a temporary restraining order halting the police from keeping people moving along protest routes. The Missouri attorney general defended the police in their efforts to maintain public safety in a city torn by violence. Authorities set up designated protest areas for those who want to stop walking and express their views. (St. Louis Post-Dispatch, August 18, 2014, by Margaret Gillerman)

  • Delighted that my friend Margaret is covering the big news, and maybe getting her name read around the world. Otherwise, a terrible situation. Daily KOS derides the chief of police of Ferguson as the worst in the U.S.
