This veil of secrecy began to lift starting in 2019, after California passed landmark legislation that made certain use-of-force and officer misconduct records accessible under the California Public Records Act.

Why Is There A Chronic Problem of Delayed Responses to California Public Records Requests?

The California Public Records Act (CPRA) states the agency generally has to give an initial response within 10 days of your request under most circumstances; an additional 14 days can be requested for unusual circumstances. The CPRA does not set a hard deadline, stating only that records must be produced “promptly.” Watch the video to learn more about the CPRA and your rights to public records in California.
