[/ultimate_heading][vc_column_text]In California the public has virtually NO access to police records–records of criminal investigations and records of internal reviews of police conduct.  Most other states provide greater public access.

Law enforcement defends California’s high degree of secrecy as necessary to protect due process rights of police, the integrity of ongoing investigations, and the privacy of witnesses and suspects.  Critics counter that more transparency would deter police misconduct and cause law enforcement to be more accountable to voters, while ultimately making policing safer by enhancing the legitimacy of police departments.

Please join the First Amendment Coalition and a panel of distinguished law-enforcement access experts for a discussion focused on the important issues of public oversight and access to law enforcement, including body cams; public access to emails on private electronic  devices; the state of the law on whether the public has access to police disciplinary proceedings, and public access to information about officer-involved shootings.[/vc_column_text][vc_separator color=”custom” accent_color=”#080087″][ultimate_heading main_heading=”EVENT DETAILS” main_heading_color=”#080087″ main_heading_font_family=”font_family:Raleway|font_call:Raleway|variant:800″ main_heading_font_size=”desktop:20px;” main_heading_line_height=”desktop:24px;” main_heading_style=”font-weight:800;” main_heading_margin=”margin-bottom:15px;”][/ultimate_heading][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1445464382411{margin-bottom: 15px !important;}”]
