San Rafael, Calif. – The First Amendment Coalition has appointed Wafa Ben-Hassine to its board of directors.

“FAC is thrilled to welcome Wafa to the board of directors,” said David Snyder, Executive Director of the First Amendment Coalition. “Wafa’s deep experience in philanthropy, journalism, technology, and global human rights will bring a unique expertise and a fresh perspective to FAC’s board.”

A technology and human rights lawyer by training, Ben-Hassine is a Director at Omidyar Network, where she leads the philanthropy’s work on online safety and oversees its international engagement on AI issues. She previously served as Global Policy Counsel and Middle East and North Africa Policy Manager at Access Now, a global nonprofit defending digital rights.

“I’m honored to join the FAC board at such a pivotal moment,” said Ben-Hassine. “As technology reshapes public discourse, it is more important than ever to defend free speech, press freedom, and government transparency—while ensuring online spaces remain safe and inclusive. I look forward to bringing my experience in technology, human rights, and global policy to advance FAC’s mission of protecting the freedoms that sustain our democracy.”

She was also a journalist, serving as the Editor-in-Chief of Tunisia Live, an independent English language news network, and a columnist at Nawaat, a blogging collective.

Ben-Hassine has also held roles with the International Finance Corporation, the Hague Institute for Innovation of Law, UNESCO, and the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights. She is currently a Term Member of the Council on Foreign Relations and currently serves on the World Economic Forum’s Global Future Council on Information Integrity.
