From left: Thomas Peele, Ginny LaRoe, David Greene, and Ben Trefny discuss the future of press freedom at KALW in San Francisco on Tuesday, January 14, 2025.
How will journalism fare under the new Trump administration? FAC Advocacy Director Ginny LaRoe participated in a conversation with other First Amendment advocates and leading journalists to explore the dangers and opportunities. The conversation included:
- How the President-elect’s rhetoric, such as the “enemy of the people” and “fake news” narratives, affect public trust.
- How journalists can prepare to meet escalating threats.
- The newsgathering challenges local journalists in California already face and what they can do about it.
KALW Executive Producer Ben Trefny moderated the panel and facilitated a community conversation featuring LaRoe; David Greene, civil liberties director and senior staff attorney for the Electronic Frontier Foundation; and Thomas Peele, co-chair of the Freedom of Information Committee of the Northern California Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.
