The First Amendment Coalition today announced the election of Erwin Chemerinsky, dean of the UC Berkeley School of Law, to its board of directors.
Chemerinsky, regarded as one of the leading constitutional law scholars in the United States, has argued numerous cases, including First Amendment challenges, at the U.S. Supreme Court. He is the author of 11 books, including “We the People: A Progressive Reading of the Constitution for the Twenty-First Century,” “Closing the Courthouse Doors: How Your Constitutional Rights Became Unenforceable” and “Free Speech on Campus.” He is the author of more than 200 law review articles and is a frequent contributor to newspapers, legal publications and journals. He maintains a law practice, frequently arguing appellate cases.
Before his appointment at Berkeley, he was the founding dean of the UC Irvine School of Law.
“Dean Chemerinsky becomes a director at an exciting time for FAC,” said Executive Director David Snyder. “It’s a time of growth and substantially increased impact, and we look forward to his leadership and vision, as well as his unparalleled knowledge, insight and acumen, as we tackle threats to free speech, a free press and government transparency.”
Chemerinsky joins a 23-member board composed of working and retired journalists, lawyers, publishers and community leaders.
