First Amendment scholar Stephen Barnett and Modesto Bee Managing Editor Dan Day are the newest additions to the California First Amendment Coalition’s board of directors.
Barnett is the Elizabeth Josselyn Professor of Law (Emeritus) at Boalt Hall. A leading scholar of First Amendment issues, Barnett is also known for his expertise in California appellate law, both as a teacher and practitioner, and as an outspoken critic of the California Supreme Court.
Day oversees daily news, features, sports and business coverage for the Modesto Bee, and supervises a newsroom staff of about 100 editors, reporters, photographers, graphic artists and researchers. Day is returning to the CFAC board after a several years’ hiatus. He was President of CFAC from 1996 to 1997.
“We are thrilled to be adding Steve and Dan to the board,” said Paul Gullixson, CFAC president. “They bring a depth of knowledge and experience in open-government matters that will be hugely helpful as CFAC continues to expand its activities,” he said.
Both Barnett and Day were invited to join the CFAC board at the board’s August 16 meeting in San Francisco. Other recent additions to the CFAC board include David E. Lee, Executive Director of the Chinese American Voters Education Committee, Dan Gillmor, founder and Director of the Center for Citizen Media, Kevin Bankston, attorney with the Electronic Frontier Foundation, and Dawn Garcia with the Knight Fellowships Program at Stanford University.
