After the Election, What Comes Next

November 9, 2024 David Snyder

Since its inception, FAC has been proudly nonpartisan. It’s one of our greatest strengths — people trust us to fight for fundamental rights no matter the politics.

As a general rule, we don’t call out politicians for things they do unless those things threaten or violate the rights we fight for. In ordinary times, we would not call out a politician who hasn’t even taken office yet.

These are not ordinary times.

Whatever you think of his policies or politics, there is no avoiding the fact that Donald Trump has, in word and deed, made clear — much clearer than any other prominent politician — he is willing to silence, punish, prosecute, and even physically harm journalists, protestors, or others whose message he disagrees with.

Nobody can predict whether these threats will be fulfilled. But the possibility alone risks chilling important First Amendment activities — journalism, demonstrations, speech. Whatever may come next, you can count on FAC to stand side-by-side with journalists, protestors, and others who depend on the First Amendment.

Our ability to do so will soon grow. In 2025, FAC will expand our defense of democracy’s fundamental rights by:

  • Adding a senior staff attorney to ensure more government transparency.
  • Increasing our oversight and lobbying of elected officials.
  • Customizing and expanding our education for journalists to empower them to do their fearless best.

To help support this crucial expansion in defense of democracy, I hope you will consider making a donation to FAC to help us meet the challenges ahead.

With gratitude,
