Defending and advancing the ability of journalists to do the important work of keeping communities informed

Recognizing a free and unfettered press is crucial for the health of our democracy, we denounce threats to press freedom and advance public policy efforts to strengthen the ability of journalists to do their jobs. We often assemble coalitions to take action on urgent issues affecting journalists’ ability to keep communities informed, and we provide trainings customized for reporters and editors. Through a dedicated California shield law initiative, we provide legal representation and referrals on reporter’s privilege, helping journalists protect their confidential sources and newsgathering material.

Press Freedom Initiative

FAC’s Press Freedom Initiative ensures journalists who lack access to qualified legal counsel get representation — at no cost to them — when they face a subpoena seeking their confidential sources or other protected materials.
