UPDATE: On September 4, 2026, San Diego District Attorney Summer Stephan announced her office will not prosecute Daniel Gold, the San Diego Police Department Officer who shot Konoa Wilson. FAC sent a second letter on September 8 renewing its demand for records related to the shooting, noting: “Now that the District Attorney and Attorney General have ruled out prosecuting the officer, the City’s position [for withholding records] is even weaker.”
The First Amendment Coalition demanded that the City of San Diego comply with FAC’s request for all records relating to a police officer’s fatal shooting of 16-year-old Konoa Wilson. Although the shooting occurred over 18 months ago and the city settled a civil lawsuit about the shooting for $30 million, the city has defied California’s police transparency laws by disclosing virtually no records except a limited excerpt of video footage.
Following an earlier lawsuit, FAC won a court order compelling the city to disclose all records related to the use of “beanbag” shotgun rounds and a police dog on Marcus Evans.
