UPDATE (3/3/2026): In early March, the principal informed students that yearbook quotes will be allowed, but with a more “rigorous review process” that gives students the opportunity to revise their quotes if the initial quote does not meet the new guidelines.
With Student Law Press Center (SPLC), FAC sent this letter to the principal of El Capitan High School in San Diego urging her to reconsider her decision to ban all senior quotes from the the high school yearbook. FAC and SPLC note the decision to remove the quotes violates students’ freedom of speech protected by California law.
