Trump runs out of cover in fight for Jan. 6 documents

The U.S. Supreme Court denied former President Donald Trump’s request to stop the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 insurrection from obtaining presidential records. Contrary to Trump’s assertions, a lower court found a serious legislative need to see the documents and no valid executive privilege to withhold them since President Joe Biden has the power to withhold or release documents to Congress under these circumstances. The ruling also dealt a cuffing to former Trump White House officials left without a challenge to subpoenas on the grounds of executive privilege. (CNN, January 19, 2022, by Ariane de Vogue, Katelyn Polantz and Tierney Sneed with contributions from Paul LeBlanc and Annie Grayer)
