The First Amendment Coalition is seeking qualified applicants to for the position of Communications and Programs Director.

The First Amendment Coalition (FAC), a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting the First Amendment and the public’s right to know, is looking for a communications and programs director with at least five years of experience in communications and event planning and promotion, preferably in the nonprofit world.

The Communications and Programs Director is responsible for working with FAC’s executive director to communicate the organization’s mission, accomplishments and goals to its members, donors, the press and the general public, particularly through knowledgeable use of social-media platforms. The position is also responsible for working with the executive director to develop FAC’s programs, including our live, free-to-the-public expert panels on topics related to free speech, government transparency and related matters.

FAC’s office is located in San Rafael, California. The person taking this position should be in the Bay Area and will be expected to work from FAC’s offices regularly.

Position Description:

The Communications and Programs Director will:

  •  Develop, coordinate and implement a social media strategy for FAC, including by preparing regular social-media communications and promotional campaigns.
  •  Prepare and coordinate print and online materials describing and promoting FAC programs.
  • Draft press releases.
  •  Assist in organizing, planning and promoting live expert panels on First Amendment issues.
  •  Work with FAC’s executive director to develop and promote FAC’s programs, including its Subpoena Defense Initiative, which aims to connect subpoenaed journalists with qualified legal counsel on a national scale.

Candidates should possess:

  •  Communications, marketing and/or journalistic experience in a non-profit organization, or traditional or digital media company. At least five years experience preferred.
  •  Specific and detailed experience managing social-media accounts and social-media campaigns for organizations.
  •  Experience planning and executing live events.
  •  Strong organizational skills.
  •  Ability to collaborate with FAC’s staff, volunteers and board members.
  •  Excellent writing skills.
  •  Demonstrated interest in and experience with issues of freedom of speech, freedom of press, and the public’s right to access government meetings and records.
