Free speech holiday cheer: Trump threatens legal action over SNL skit

President Donald Trump issued a tweet that called for bringing legal action against “Saturday Night Live” (SNL) and NBC for its “scandal of one-sided coverage.” An Alec Baldwin spoof on “It’s a Wonderful Life” prompted Trump’s threat. (Variety, December 16, 2018, by Ted Johnson)

It is unlikely that Trump could prevail in court in that political satire is protected by the First Amendment and the SLN spoof was not defamatory, that is, full of  false statements issued with reckless disregard for the truth and resulting in real damage to a person’s reputation. (Forbes, December 17, 2018, by Legal Entertainment Contributor)

The rather innocuous fantasy portrays the lives of those in Trump’s obit and what would have happened had he not run for president.  (Huffington Post, December 14, 2018, by Mary Papenfuss)
