Blow to political speech: Federal appeals court restricts robocalls

Patriotic Veterans of Indiana failed to persuade the 7th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals that the the state’s ban on robocalls stifled political speech. The court found that the law does not ban robocalls on the basis of content but rather requires the person called to permit the calls and as such was a valid regulation of the time, place and manner of the communication. The 7th Circuit found that Indiana had a valid reason for protecting people from robocalls that a person’s time and effort is valuable. The court said there were many other ways to spread political messages including by newspapers, TV, websites and Facebook. (FindLaw, January 6, 2017, by William Vogeler)
