Federal court delivers major victory for net-neutrality

A federal appeals court upheld net-neutrality providing a victory to internet companies including Google and N etflix who favor treating all content equally and not allowing some to pay for speedy access. “FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler said the ruling was ‘a victory for consumers and innovators who deserve unfettered access to the entire web, and it ensures the internet remains a platform for unparalleled innovation, free expression and economic growth,'” wrote McKinnon and Kendall. The court supports the Federal Communications Commission in treating high speed internet service as a utility and rejects internet service providers including AT&T in their First Amendment claims that current rules impose unfair restrictions. (Ars Technica, June 14, 2016, by Jon Brodkin)
