Twitter closes down terrorism accounts

Twitter said it closed down over 125,000 accounts tied to terrorism since mid-year 2015. It increased the number of employees scanning for terrorism and works with the FBI and other law enforcement agencies from time to time. Twitter wants to maintain an open platform while enforcing its own rules against violence. (betanews, February 6, 2016, by Mark Wilson)

Twitter’s efforts come in response to the requests from the U.S. and other governments to destroy ISIS terrorist messages recruiting and promoting acts of violence.  While admitting difficulties in accomplishing the task, Twitter said, “In spite of these challenges we will continue to aggressively enforce our rules in this area and engage with authorities and other relevant organizations to find viable solutions to eradicate terrorist content from the Internet and promote powerful counter-speech narratives.” (Dawn, February 6, 2016, by Agence France-Presse)
