Texas decision opens path to display Bible verses on football banners

High school cheerleaders in Kountze, Texas prevailed in Texas Supreme Court in a quest to secure the right to paint Bible verses on run-through banners displayed a football games. The school district claimed the banners were government speech but lawyers for the cheerleaders said they were the cheerleaders’ private speech protected by Texas law. The high court remanded the case to the appeals court for reconsideration. The court has previously ruled that the case was moot since the school district had abandoned their opposition to the banners. But the court ruled that “the District’s voluntary abandonment here provides no assurance that the District will not prohibit the cheerleaders from displaying banners with religious signs or messages at school-sponsored events in the future.” (Christian Today, January 31, 2016, by Jonah Hicap)
