Free speech under attack in 2015

It was a rough year for the First Amendment with assaults on the press around the world, the Charlie Hebdo terrorist attack and the turmoil on college campuses over controversial and repulsive expression. A number of millenials favor the government regulating free press and free speech to protect the public. (GazetteXtra, December 31, 2015, by Gene Policinski of the First Amendment Center)

The National Coalition Against Censorship listed 15 threats to free speech in the past year including several in the schools including a case of punishing a high school student’s tweet; a ban on a book reading about a transgender youth; and hysteria over world history textbooks that depict Islam favorably. Other threats include politicians controlling the views of scientists who challenge climate change denial and new restrictions on reporters trying to cover Guantanamo Bay prison camp.
