Free speech: U.S. Supreme Court endorses challenge to Ohio law banning ‘false statements’ in political campaigns

The U.S. Supreme Court is allowing a challenge to proceed to an Ohio law that bans “false statements” during political campaigns. The pro-life Susan B. Anthony List brought suit against the law after the group was threatened with legal action for a billboard they planned stating that a congressman going for reelection voted for Obama care thereby voting for  taxpayer-funded abortion. The Court found that even though no criminal charges were filed, the threat of an indictment chilled the free speech of the litigants. The ruling sends the case back to federal district court for a ruling on the constitutionality of the Ohio law. (Cincinnati.com, June 16, 2014, by Deirdre Shesgreen of USAToday)
