A&A: Tape recordings of meetings

Q: I want to listen to a tape recording of a meeting of the Fire District Board of Directors (they are elected). I have been told the recording is not public record. Don’t they have to make it available for 30 days?

A: Yes, Code sec. 54953.5(b) requires agency to keep any recordings for at least 30 days and to treat such recordings as public records unless and until they are erased or destroyed (which they are allowed to do after the initial 30 days).
