Vietnamese American press: Libel suit ends with takeover

After winning a $4.5 million judgment in a defamation suit, the Nguoi Viet Daily News Inc. in Orange County, California is taking over The Little Saigon News Inc. The Little Saigon News published an article in 2012 that said that the Nguoi Viet CEO was a communist agent and running the company in  concert with the wishes of the communist government in Vietnam. Vietnamese Americans in the newspaper business have little experience with U.S. libel law and the decision against The Little Saigon may prompt greater awareness of the dangers of red-baiting. It may also dampen enthusiasm for printing rumors about the private lives of opponents that could lead to libel charges. (The Orange County Register, July 30, 2015, by Margot Rosevelt)
