Utah’s law requiring nonprofits to disclose donors challenged in federal court

Three Utah nonprofits are challenging a law that would force them to reveal the identities of donors if the nonprofits express opinions on political issues. The law was passed in the wake of a scandal in which the Utah attorney general laundered campaign donation money from payday lenders through a nonprofit to hide the identity of the lenders. Critics of the law claim that it violates free speech putting groups like Planned Parenthood or Right to Life from speaking out on political issues and discouraging their donors from making contributions.
